A direct view of the catastrophic structural damage to the western facade (E Ring) of the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, photographed in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. At 9:37 a.m. EDT, hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 (Boeing 757-223, call sign AAL77) struck the western side of the building, penetrating the outer rings and triggering a severe structural collapse alongside intense fires. The image shows the exposed interior offices, reinforced concrete framework, and shoring timbers installed during early recovery and stabilization efforts prior to the Phoenix Project reconstruction.

The attack killed all 64 people aboard the aircraft and 125 people inside the Pentagon.
